What exactly is Perioral Dermatitis?

Symptoms of Perioral Dermatitis

  • Small, red, or flesh-colored papules: These bumps are usually clustered and may appear scaly or have a slight crusting. Itching or burning sensation: Perioral dermatitis can be accompanied by discomfort, including itching, burning, or a feeling of tightness in the affected area.
  • Dry or flaky skin: The skin around the mouth may become dry, rough, or flaky, and in some cases, there may be mild swelling.

Causes of Perioral Dermatitis

  • Topical Steroid Use: Prolonged or inappropriate use of topical corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone creams, on the face can disrupt the skin's natural barrier and contribute to the development of perioral dermatitis.
  • Irritants: Exposure to certain irritants, such as harsh cosmetics, facial cleansers, toothpaste containing fluoride, or even environmental factors like wind or cold weather, can trigger or worsen perioral dermatitis.
  • Moisturizers and Heavy Face Creams: Certain occlusive moisturizers or heavy face creams that can block the pores and trap moisture can contribute to the development of perioral dermatitis. These products may disrupt the skin's natural balance and create a favorable environment for the condition to occur.
  • Oral Contraceptives: Some studies have suggested a potential link between perioral dermatitis and the use of oral contraceptives. Hormonal changes associated with birth control pills may contribute to the development of the condition in some individuals.
  • Bacterial or Fungal Infections: In some cases, perioral dermatitis may be associated with underlying bacterial or fungal infections. For example, the presence of a type of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus or the yeast-like fungus called Malassezia has been observed in some cases of perioral dermatitis.
  • Genetic Predisposition: While not fully understood, there may be a genetic component to perioral dermatitis.

What's in our Calendula Skin repair toner?

Calendula

Calendula, an herb, has an ancient history of use in many cultures for its therapeutic benefits, particularly for treating skin ailments as it contains powerful anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It's also used in traditional medicine for reducing inflammation, promoting wound healing, and soothing irritated skin. Calendula is also rich in antioxidants that help to protect the skin from free radical damage and promote healthy cell growth. It's a natural source of vitamin E and essential fatty acids, which nourish and moisturize the skin. Calendula, a natural antiseptic, has also been found to be effective in treating a variety of skin conditions including perioral dermatitis, acne, eczema and psoriasis.

Poppy Seed Oil

Poppy seed oil, extracted from the seeds of the poppy flower, is a natural ingredient that's been used for centuries in traditional medicine and skincare. Known for its anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce redness, irritation, and swelling in the skin, it makes an effective ingredient for people with perioral dermatitis and acne-prone skin. Rich in vitamins and minerals that are essential for healthy skin such as vitamin A, which helps promote cell regeneration, along with zinc, which can help reduce inflammation. Poppy seed oil is a light, non-greasy oil that is easily absorbed by the skin. It's non-comedogenic, which means it won't clog pores or cause breakouts.

Coconut Powder

Coconut powder is a versatile ingredient made from dried and ground coconut flesh. It has a long history, with evidence of its use dating back centuries in Southeast Asia, where coconut palms are native. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, coconut powder became increasingly popular in Europe and North America for medicinal uses. With anti-inflammatory properties, coconut powder can help to soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation. Both antibacterial and antifungal, it can help fight acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation. Also known as an effective moisturizer rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, coconut powder helps reduce the signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles.
